Apple Watch Series 12: Price, Release Date, Ceramic Case, and Everything You Need to Know

• Announced Sept 9, 2026 at Apple's Surprise and Shine event, with pre-orders open the same day.
• Three case materials: aluminum from $399, titanium from $699, ceramic from $899.
• New Health Sensing System reads heart rate every five seconds, about 60x more often, Apple says.
• S11 chip with a 4-core Neural Engine powers Audio Intelligence in watchOS 27.
• Ceramic returns for the first time since Series 5, in Pearl White and Night Blue.

Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm, GPS or GPS + Cellular with 5G and LTE. Apple lists starting prices, so the 46mm size and cellular add to the total. The sensor upgrades are identical across all three materials. The extra money buys a different case and a harder crystal, not more features.

Ceramic resists scratches and keeps its finish in a way polished metal does not. That is what the $899 buys, along with a sapphire crystal front. It is also the heaviest Series 12 and slightly larger. Standard 42mm and 46mm protective cases may not fit. Bands are unaffected because the lug spacing is the same.

Eight finishes across three materials, and every Apple band fits every one of them. Aluminum gets Ceramic Shield 2 this year, which Apple says is 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass on earlier aluminum watches.

• Lightest: aluminum Black or Space Gray at 39.5 g for the 46mm.
• Dressiest without the ceramic premium: Radiant Gold or Natural titanium.
• Still looks new in three years: sapphire on titanium or ceramic.
• Pairs with the season's bands: Light Gold and Radiant Gold suit the new Burgundy Plaid Sport Loop.

The S11 is a 64-bit dual-core chip with a 4-core Neural Engine and 64GB of storage. Apple credits it with the new Audio Intelligence features in watchOS 27.

• Live Rewind keeps a transcript of the previous 15 seconds. Raise your wrist and read what you missed.
• Sound Recognition taps you for sirens, alarms, doorbells, and a baby crying.
• Siri Recap summarizes what was said around you. It is a beta, later in 2026, English first.
• Shazam is built in.
• New Siri is powered by Apple Intelligence for better multistep requests.

This is the best reason to move from a Series 10 or 11. Apple says the third-generation electrical heart sensor has a larger electrode surface for better ECG contact, and the optical sensor uses photodiodes in a ring with larger green LEDs. The practical result is sampling rate.

• Heart rate every 5 seconds all day, about 60x more often, per Apple.
• HRV about every 5 minutes, up to 24x more often.
• Readiness score each morning: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.
• Carried over: blood oxygen, temperature sensor, ECG, depth gauge to 6 m, compass, altimeter.
• Redesigned Health app with Insights, Longevity, and Health Age tabs arrives later in 2026.

The Always-On Retina display is a wide-angle LTPO3 OLED with a 1 nit minimum, so it stays readable from the side and will not light up a dark bedroom. Battery is rated at up to 24 hours, which means a daily charge. Fast charging makes up the gap: Apple says 80% in about 30 minutes with the included cable.

• Resolution: 416 x 496 px on 46mm, 374 x 446 px on 42mm.
• Outdoor workout: up to 10 hours.
• Water and dust: 50 m water resistance, IP6X.
• Connectivity: Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 5.3, second-gen Ultra Wideband, Precision L1 GPS, optional 5G/LTE.

Same $399 as Series 11, same 42mm and 46mm sizes. The extra year buys the new sensors and ceramic.

Buy it if

• You own a Series 9 or older. The jump is bigger with two generations of changes.
• You want the smallest, lightest watch with the Readiness score.
• You want ceramic. Nothing else offers it.

Skip it if

• You own a Series 11 and do not need five-second sampling. watchOS 27 brings the new Siri anyway.
• Battery is your pain point. Ultra 4 is rated for 50 hours with the same sensors.

Existing 42mm and 46mm bands from Series 10 and 11 fit directly. Older 44mm and 45mm bands work with the 46mm case, and 40mm and 41mm bands with the 42mm.
