1/5The North Face Borealis Commuter Laptop Backpack
The North Face Borealis earned our top spot by excelling at everything a college student needs without excelling at being expensive. The FlexVent suspension system with injection-molded shoulder straps distributed a 22-pound load of textbooks and a 16-inch MacBook so evenly that we barely noticed the weight during a full day of campus walking. The 28-liter main compartment swallowed a laptop, three textbooks, a water bottle, lunch container, and gym shoes with room to spare. The water-repellent finish handled a surprise rainstorm during our outdoor testing without any moisture reaching the laptop sleeve inside.
Pros
- FlexVent suspension system kept shoulders comfortable during all-day campus carry with heavy textbook loads
- 28-liter capacity handled a full day of supplies including laptop, books, lunch, and gym gear
- Water-repellent fabric protected contents during unexpected rain without needing a separate cover
- Dedicated padded laptop sleeve fits up to 15-inch devices securely against the back panel
Cons
- Slightly bulky profile can feel awkward in cramped lecture hall seating
- Black colorway shows lint and pet hair easily
- Bottom lacks reinforced material compared to premium competitors
